When I tested the Nomadic ID recently I loved that feature immediately! Awesome stuff, any fediverse software should support IMHO.
Testing with changing the main account of two accounts in sync worked flawlessliy. Only the ActiveSync connections did not move with the account, what is no big surprise. They are bound to the other account.

But do we support the other side in that? Mastodon has some .. let me call ist .. small version of the nomadic id. It can move accounts from one instance to another supporting relocation of the connections made. Well, at least connections supporting this. Do we? If I am connected to a mastodon account that move do we react on account movement?

How does nomadic id work please? In the sign-in page is a hyperlink 'remote authentication'. After the account detail is entered, another sign-in and password web page appears?

Account Cloning

Accounts in Hubzilla are referred to as nomadic identities, because a member's identity is not bound to the hub where the identity was originally created.  For example, when you create a Facebook or Gmail account, it is tied to those services.  They cannot function without Facebook.com or Gmail.com.

By contrast, say you've created a Hubzilla identity called tina@Hubzillahub.com.  You can clone it to another Hubzilla hub by choosing the same, or a different name: liveForever@SomeHubzillaHub.info

Both channels are now synchronized, which means all your contacts and preferences will be duplicated on your clone.  It doesn't matter whether you send a post from your original hub, or the new hub.  Posts will be mirrored on both accounts.

This is a rather revolutionary feature, if we consider some scenarios:

- What happens if the hub where an identity is based suddenly goes offline?  Without cloning, a member will not be able to communicate until that hub comes back online (no doubt many of you have seen and cursed the Twitter "Fail Whale").  With cloning, you just log into your cloned account, and life goes on happily ever after.

- The administrator of your hub can no longer afford to pay for his free and public Hubzilla hub. He announces that the hub will be shutting down in two weeks.  This gives you ample time to clone your identity(ies) and preserve yourHubzilla relationships, friends and content.

- What if your identity is subject to government censorship?  Your hub provider may be compelled to delete your account, along with any identities and associated data.  With cloning, Hubzilla offers censorship resistance.  You can have hundreds of clones, if you wanted to, all named different, and existing on many different hubs, strewn around the internet.

@Mario Vavti Hmm!
I really need to establish a Hubzilla dev environment finally in order to get an impression on how difficult these ports are.. I love that software more and more (thanks a lot for all your work Mario btw!) and I think it really would be worth contributing.
I guess I have to open another post on that forum for "what dev environment and how.." :-)

Yes, I think it is not that well documented, at least I had to ask others too.

- You start by opening the url "/uexport" in your account. This will ask if you want to install the app "Channel export". From there there are some different exporters, the first is the most important (exporting your account identity and you connections). All other exporters exports content of your account.
- Then you go to another Hubzilla server and start to create a new account (or have already one). In that account create a new channel. You will be asked if it should be completely new or from an export. Choose from export and import the file exported on that other server.

This will create a synced copy of your channel from server 1. From now on, it doesn't matter, what login you choose. These two synced accounts are in reality only one. (seen from the outside). If the main server gets temporarily offline, you can write on that other server from your account.

And if that original server dies for any reason you simply declare your "copy" as "main copy" what changes your "address", but not your connections and stuff. (Connections only work for Hubzilla / Stream accounts atm).

Or does it the other direction too? Meaning: Faking a mastodon move to AP instances when main copy is changing. Should be possible too, shouldn't it?

@citc Well... Coders doing code.. not manuals.. But you are always invited to help I guess! :-)
When you try this functionality write down your experience, create a manual and share it. So the next person trying it has something good to read. :-)
English is not my mothers tongue, so I am starting a litte wiki in German on that, writing about my experiences. :-)
